Liftoff of the Ariane 5 ECA with its dual-satellite payload!
Arianespace's first mission of 2006 is underway following the Ariane 5 ECA launcher's liftoff from the Spaceport in French Guiana.
The Ariane 5 is carrying a dual-satellite payload consisting of the HOT BIRDTM 7A and SPAINSAT telecommunications spacecraft.
Tonight's mission will last approximately 32 minutes. SPAINSAT will be placed in orbit first, with the spacecraft's separation planned approximately 27 minutes after liftoff. This is Spain's first satellite dedicated to secure government communications, and it carries 13 X-band transponders plus one Ka-band transponder. SPAINSAT was produced by Space Systems/Loral in Palo Alto, California, and will be operated by the Hisdesat company.
The HOT BIRD 7A satellite is to be released about 32 minutes into the mission. Once it arrives at its orbital location, HOT BIRD 7A will be utilized by Europe's Eutelsat to relay television and radio broadcasting programming. This spacecraft was built by Alcatel Alenia Space, and is the 21th satellite launched by Arianespace for Eutelsat.
