According to a long tradition, on the seventh day of May, Split, together with the Split-Makarska Archdiocese, celebrates its heavenly patron Saint Domnius. In Split jargon, they call him St. Duje. He is originally from Syria. He lived in the third and fourth centuries. He was the bishop of Solin. He suffered martyrdom in 304, when Rome was ruled by the infamous Emperor Diocletian. His body was buried outside the city walls of Salona, in the northern cemetery today called Manastirine. In the 5th century, a large basilica was built over his tomb, which was demolished by the barbarians in 614. When Pope John IV. originally from Dalmatia, sent in 642 Abbot Martin to find the relics of the martyrs of Solin and Istria, among them were the relics of Dujm. Then part of his bones was transferred to Rome, to the chapel of St. Venance inside the Lateran Basilica. The rest of his relics were transferred at the instigation of the first Archbishop of Split, Ivan Ravenjanin, in 650 from the destroyed Salona to his cathedral church, the former mausoleum of Diocletian. This mausoleum has been converted into the Cathedral of St. Mary, which was eventually named the Cathedral of St. Dujma.
