In breve: elevazione/inclinazione significa guardare in alto, declinazione significa guardare in basso.
https://www.digital-forum.it/showth...nto-parabola&p=7597487&viewfull=1#post7597487 ).

To extend to what you, @foxbat, wrote:
Alas, in this topic (but also in many other places!) the terms 'elevation' and 'declination' are used, as if it was clear to which angle exactly they refer.
Though by definition, as far as I know, declination and inclination/elevation (definition-wise) are just two terms for the same thing, but with a different reference base/axis.
(You often find that declination = 90 degrees - inclination.)
In short: elevation/inclination is looking up, declination is looking down.
In a motor setup, the term "elevation" is often used as a short for the motor axis elevation angle, against the ground/horizontal.
(However, sometimes they say that the motor elevation should be set at the latitude value, while in fact that should be (about) the declination angle! An experienced hobbyist would know how to understand that sentence, though.)
In a motor setup, the term "declination" is often used as a short for the dish declination offset angle (against the axis angle).
The term declination could however also refer to the total dish declination angle from the vertical, dish offset angle included, or excluded.
[Added: and yes, there is also a thing as "magnetic declination angle", as loremotors wrote...! ]
I have found, that if not the full terms '(motor) axis elevation angle' and 'dish declination offset angle' are used in an explanation, the explanation is mostly not very complete (or even worse).
So I hope that mckernan has learned a bit extra since his above posting, about motor setups and how to explain them. (And, by the way, also about explaining the offset angle of a dish.)
I know that I have made errors in the past, and sometimes also in the present, so it is all in the game on a forum with hobbyists.
I've noticed that for motorized setups, several misconceptions keep being mentioned over and over again (as foxbat also mentioned,
https://www.digital-forum.it/showth...nto-parabola&p=7597487&viewfull=1#post7597487 )
I might write an article about it sometime...
I hope the italian translation is understandable.
Ciao,
