On Easter Sunday, April 17, the appointment with the Explosion of the Cart, the ancient Florentine popular tradition that has been handed down for over nine centuries, returns. The re-enactment traces the deeds of the Florentines at the Crusades and their return to the city in 1101. After having skipped the 2020 appointment, due to a pandemic, and having carried out the traditional ceremony in a reduced form last year, Florentines and tourists will be able to return in Piazza San Giovanni. All those who participate must wear the Ffp2 mask. There will be a buffer zone to allow for the Explosion of the Cart.
The city authorities will be present at the event. This year the entire event will be broadcast by Toscana TV (Canale 18) and Tele Iride (Canale 96). The story entrusts the origins of the outbreak of the chariot to Pazzino de 'Pazzi, on his return from a crusade in 1099. It was Pazzino, in fact, who brought back some flint stones from the tomb of Christ with which the celebrations of Holy Saturday were then illuminated in Florence. Later the ceremony was moved to Sunday and the Florentines decided to build a triumphal chariot which is still escorted to Piazza Duomo by the armigers of the Municipality in typical costumes. The current shape of the wagon dates back to the 1600s. Throughout the year, the 'Brindellone' remains in a special warehouse in via il Prato and on Easter day it arrives at the Cathedral dragged by four oxen, cleaned up and dressed up for the party. The departure of the procession with the 'Brindellone' will take place, as always, from Porta al Prato; This will be followed by the exhibition of the Bandierai degli Uffizi in Piazza della Repubblica, the draw for the historic Florentine football tournament in San Giovanni which precedes the fireworks display by a few minutes.
Easter Sunday April 17th
5.00 am - Arrival of the oxen at the Cascine, avenue of the Air Force.
6.15 am - Departure of the oxen from the Cascine, avenue of the Air Force.
7.30 am - The "Chariot of Fire", accompanied by the Historical Parade of the Florentine Republic, leaves from the depot in Via il Prato to reach Piazza Duomo with the following itinerary:
Via Il Prato, Borgo Ognissanti, Piazza Goldoni, Via della Vigna Nuova, Via Strozzi, P.za della Repubblica, Via Roma.
8.10 am - A representation of the Uffizi Flagi, along via Porta Rossa - via Calimala - via Roma, reaches Piazza Duomo, where their performance is scheduled with the musicians waiting for the coming procession, together with the "Chariot of Fire" , from Via Il Prato.
8.20 - A representation of the Procession of the Florentine Republic leaves from the Piazzetta di Parte Guelfa continuing along via Porta Rossa, Loggia del Mercato Nuovo, Via Vacchereccia, P.za della Signoria where at around 8.50, together with the Gonfalone, the Mayor and to the Authorities, it moves towards Via Calzaiuoli, Via degli Speziale, Piazza della Repubblica, Via Roma, P.za Duomo, arriving at around 9.30.
9.30 am - Arrival of the historical procession with the "Chariot of Fire" in P.za Duomo.
9.45 am - Draw for the matching of the matches of the S. Giovanni Tournament.
10.30 am - The procession of Seminarians, Canons and Concelebrants goes to the churchyard of the Cathedral and there the Eucharistic celebration of Easter Day begins with the blessing of the Chariot of Fire and the faithful.
11.00 - Explosion of the Cart.
12.30 - At the end of the Mass the Banner, the Fire Door with the reliquary with the Stones of the Holy Sepulcher, come out from the central door of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, along via Calzaiuoli, P.zza Signoria, Via Vacchereccia, Borgo SS. Apostoli (Chiesa SS. Apostoli) with deposition of the Stones of the Holy Sepulcher.
Return of the banner to Palazzo Vecchio with the reverse route to Piazza Signoria.
The Carro del Fuoco is accompanied to Via del Prato by the Municipal Police with the opposite route to the outward one.
