Ho installato il driver proprietario proposto da ubuntu, tramite l'applicazione "Driver Hardware" nel menù Sistema > Amministrazione > Driver Hardware.
Si è generato un file xorg.conf in apparenza dal contenuto corretto. Ho riavviato il sistema, ho scelto la versione del kernel 2.6.31-20, ed il pc si è bloccato come al solito (non carica il server X). Ho riavviato, ho scelto la versione del kernel 2.6.31-19. ed il server si è avviato, ma si percepisce una evidente lentezza dell'interfaccia grafica (qualcosa, quindi, non funziona). Ho rimosso, quindi il driver.
Le allego il contenuto del file Xorg.0.log generato.

io non sono un esperto di configurazione di X (che -sotto certi aspetti- è un mondo a parte :D ) però nel log si legge:

il driver utilizzato -per il modulo fglrx- funziona con una versione di X= 1.4
Nella Ubuntu 9.10 invece il server X è 1.6:

X.Org X Server 1.6.4

Mi verrebbe da pensare che i driver ATI che stai usando non sono compatibili con Ubuntu 9.10.....
 
sto già scaricando sia l'alternate che la desktop...domani procedo con l'avanzamento di versione;)
 
ciao ragazzi, avrei un problema nell'installazione di Ubuntu 8.10....
quando arrivo al passaggio 4/7 bisogna scegliere su quale partizione installare il sistema operativo....
scelgo quello manuale, scelgo la partizione che ho creato con Gparted ma mi da errore di root....

che cosa significa?:eusa_think:

p.s. la partizione l'ho formattata con file system ext3

La partizione era preesistente all'installazione o l'hai creata con GParted al momento dell'installazione ?

Perchè Danger non installi Ubuntu 9.10 o 10.04 con filesystem ext4 ?...:eusa_think: ormai anche Google è passato a ext4...:doubt: ;)

L' immagine comunque non si ingrandisce e non riesco a leggere l' errore che ti dà precisamente...:eusa_think:...ah hai deframmentato il disco prima di creare la partizione ?...G parted come ti avevo accennato in un altro 3d spesso da problemi con Ubuntu, quindi io ti consiglierei di usare Partition Magic piuttosto ....;)

Comunque, tornando all'errore, Dangerfamily dovresti cercare un attimino di zoomare un po' la foto perchè non si legge assolutamente nulla.
Mi sembra di capire che la dicitura sia "non è stato definito un filesystem di root": se è così, semplicemente non hai indicato/selezionato quale partizione sarà che dovrà diventare la tua root filesystem del sistema Linux. Attenzione, perchè la partizione che indichi deve non essere montata nel momento in cui la vai a utilizzare.

Guarda che io parlo sempre e solo per esperienza diretta ANDREMALES ...:evil5: ;) ..comunque basta che ti fai un "giretto" sui forum di Ubuntu ed è pieno di utenti "non molto esperti" che non facendo partire G Parted dalla "live" per ridurre, aumentare e fare chissà cos' altro con le partizioni poi riscontrano mille problemi...:doubt: comunque ho trovato adesso cercando questo link :

là si parla di problemi nel far funzionare GParted, non di problemi sul risultato ottenuto. E' ben diversa la cosa: dò per scontato che una volta ottenuta la partizione - e quindi utilizzato GParted con successo- eventuali altri problemi riscontrati successivamente siano riconducibili ad altro.
Come ho già detto in precedenza, facciamo attenzione ai consigli che si danno agli utenti non esperti: si può rischiare di fargli fare ulteriori danni.

si, l'errore è proprio quello, anzi continua dicendo "correggere l'errore dal menù partizionamento"......
quindi in questo caso cosa mi consigli di fare nello specifico?:eusa_think:

Beh mi sembra che danger aveva detto questo...senza specificare "come" e "da dove" avesse partizionato...:doubt: e mi sembra di avergli consigliato "intelligentemente" solo di installare una versione più recente di Ubuntu, semmai anche con ext3 per poi "migrare" a ext4, di deframmentare il disco e di usare piuttosto Partition Magic che a mio avviso è migliore di G Parted....non vedo quali "danni" possa mai fare così sinceramente anche un "Utente inesperto"...:doubt:

EDIT:lascio solo le spiegazioni "tecniche" così come mi è stato chiesto...;)

comunque, io vorrei scaricare la distro 10.04(anche perchè più aggiornata e più completa) ma non ho internet flat e quindi devo far quadrare tutta la soglia mensile che mi danno......

ritornando in tema, ho partizionato con Gparted facendo il boot da CD, se questo può servire......
comunque non sono riuscito a deframmentare da Vista con Defraggler, perchè non mi vede la partizione....

ripeto: il problema non è in Gparted che è un programma eccellente; il problema risiede nella pianificazione di utilizzo del disco, che deve essere selezionato per il mount della root o per gli altri filesystem interessati.
Vedrò se riesco stasera a farti un paio di screenshot.
